EPS thermal insulation (DEO): Efficient protection under screed
EPS (expanded polystyrene), known as Styropor®, is the standard insulation material when it comes to economical and effective thermal insulation in floor structures. It is particularly widely used as insulation under screed. However, it is important to note that a pressure-resistant quality must be used for this application! As your nationwide screed specialists, we ensure the selection and professional installation of the right EPS thermal insulation as a solid base for your floor.
EPS as thermal insulation: the principle
The insulating effect of EPS is based on the air trapped in the small polystyrene beads.
- Thermal conductivity (lambda λ): Indicates how well the material insulates (the lower, the better). Gray EPS (with graphite added) generally insulates better than white EPS with the same thickness.
- Save energy: Correctly dimensioned EPS insulation significantly reduces downward heat loss and helps to meet the requirements of the German Building Energy Act(GEG).
Decisive under screed: the compressive strength (EPS DEO)
This is the most critical point: normal EPS (e.g. for facades) is far too soft for use under screed!
- Requirement: Here you need pressure-resistant EPS, labeled according to DIN V 4108-10 as DEO (insulation withoutsound insulation requirements) or classified according to compressive stress (e.g. EPS 100 / 150 / 200, corresponding to 100 / 150 / 200 kPa compressive strength).
- Why? The screed and the subsequent live load would compress softer EPS, leading to cracks in the screed and damage to the floor covering. The compressive strength of EPS is therefore non-negotiable here!
Thermal insulation on floor slabs & basement ceilings
EPS DEO is the ideal choice for pure thermal insulation of the floor on load-bearing substrates such as concrete ceilings or floor slabs above ground/unheated basements if there are no special requirements for impact sound insulation.
What we pay attention to during installation
Even with this tried-and-tested material, it's the details that count:
- Gapless laying of the tiles (tightly butted).
- Flat base.
- Cover with a separating layer (PE foil) before screed installation.
Your partner for EPS insulation (DEO) - Nationwide
We make sure that:
- the correct pressure-resistant EPS quality (DEO with the appropriate kPa value) is selected.
- the installation is carried out professionally as the basis for our screed work.
- Your floor structure meets the standards - nationwide.
EPS DEO - Economical thermal insulation for floors
EPS thermal insulation of the DEO type is a cost-effective and proven solution for thermally insulating floors under screed - provided that the essential compressive strength is observed and the installation is carried out professionally.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
No, by no means! You absolutely need pressure-resistant EPS DEO (e.g. EPS 100 or EPS 150) to prevent settlement and screed cracks.
Yes, gray EPS (with graphite) generally has a better (lower) lambda value for the same thickness and therefore insulates more effectively.
No, EPS DEO is primarily designed for thermal insulation. For impact sound insulation, you need special EPS-T boards (application type DES).
