Synthetic resin screed (SR)

Synthetic resin screed (SR, or “Synthetic Resin Screed”) offers numerous advantages and is an important part of modern construction due to its versatile application possibilities. Fillers such as quartz sand, which are mixed with a binding agent such as epoxy or polyurethane resin during installation, serve as the basis for the floor coating. The synthetic resin allows the screed to harden quickly and gives it special properties such as a high load capacity, flexibility and chemical resistance. This makes synthetic resin screed ideal for use in demanding areas where conventional screeds may not be sufficient. However, this type of screed is also associated with comparatively higher material and processing costs.

Application areas of synthetic resin screed

Synthetic resin screed is extremely resilient due to its special composition. This makes it very suitable for applications in which the floor is constantly subject to high mechanical stress or comes into contact with chemicals. A typical example of this are commercial and industrial applications such as production facilities, warehouses or workshops. Heavy equipment such as machines or forklifts often exerts considerable pressure on the floor here, which means that normal screeds quickly reach their limits. Due to its high strength and flexibility, synthetic resin screed is able to withstand these high loads over the long term. Even accidents with falling materials and contact with moisture or cleaning agents do not affect a professionally laid synthetic resin screed.

Other uses for synthetic resin screed:

  • Electronics industry: Electrostatic discharges can cause major damage in areas where sensitive technical devices or components are used. With special additives such as carbon fibers or metallic fillers, it is possible to give the synthetic resin screed antistatic properties in accordance with DIN EN 61340-5-1.
  • Food processing: In bakeries, kitchens and butcher shops, the floor not only has to be resilient, but also easy to clean and able to handle harsh cleaning agents. With its closed surface and high chemical resistance, synthetic resin-based screed is the ideal choice for these applications.
  • Public areas: Whether it's a train station, shopping center, school or hospital - in buildings with high foot traffic, conventional floors wear out very quickly. Synthetic resin screed offers a long-lasting alternative to conventional types of screed that can be optically adjusted if required.
  • Renovation or refurbishment: Existing floors with cracks or other optical/technical defects can be quickly repaired or covered with synthetic resin screed and thus reliably protected against the ingress of moisture or chemicals, for example. And that thanks to the fast curing within a very short time.

Lay synthetic resin screed

For an optimal result, the formulation of the screed must be individually tailored to the respective needs and stresses. This requires a specialist company with the appropriate knowledge and experience.

Basically synthetic resin screed belongs to the compound screeds. This means that it is always firmly connected to the ground. There are no floating screeds made of synthetic resin.

The length of time from processing to setting depends on the temperature. As a rule, the drying time lasts a few days, and good ventilation is essential. Under good conditions, synthetic resin screed can be walked on after 2-3 days.

Attention: If ignited, harmful vapors can form.

What ingredients are contained in synthetic resin screed?

The basis of synthetic resin screed is fire-dried quartz sand, sometimes other hard materials such as corundum. Various substances are possible as binders. Epoxy resins (EP), polyurethanes (PUR), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and unsaturated polyester resins (UP) are used most frequently.

Is synthetic resin screed suitable for heavily used areas?

Yes, thanks to its compact network structure, synthetic resin screed has extremely high compressive, tensile and bending strength as well as high wear resistance. This makes the synthetic floor coating particularly suitable for areas that are subject to heavy traffic, such as warehouses with forklift traffic, shopping arcades or multi-storey car parks.

What surface tensile strength must synthetic resin screed have?
When laid in bond, the required surface tensile strength depends on whether the areas are trafficked or not. It must be 1 N/mm² in areas that are not driven on, and 1,5 N/mm² in areas that are driven on.
